I made a couple of simple changes tonight to RCM. The only visible changes are with the drop down box to select comics: the box now shows the comic you are on instead of the most recent one all the time, and clicking a comic in the box will send you to the comic instead of you needing to hit the 'Go' button. So yeah, a minor cosmetic change and some javascript tossed in. Now the part you can't see: I altered the database to track comments more like I do with rantfest. I wanted to do a 'Most Recent Comments' box, but with the database layed out the way it was it would have taken too much effort and been terribly inefficient. I then went and updated the relevent entries by hand.

Posted on: 2006-08-04 08:58:39[ More - 2 comments ]So, I was all happy with the RCM update last night. Then I was talking to Dave and he pointed out some flaws that were showing up on his setup. All of the FireFox ones seemed unique to his machine, but I had the Internet Explorer ones to a much lesser degree. Of course, I am also using thebeta version of IE, and he is using IE6. Then again, I always expect issues in IE when I have a properly coded page. So after an extreme amount of effort, I finally broke down and set up all my forms using tables instead of CSS. The forms seem to be much happier that way. I still have an error in the right column if I have comments in IE, but it does not detract from functionality and is only visible if you scroll to the bottom of that column. It will be fixed, but probably not too soon.

I spent the majority of the evening not working on RCM like I had planned and instead just kinda surfing around. Once I did get into working on RCM, I spent more time playing with Photoshop and my CSS files than actually getting code written.

Posted on: 2006-07-27 08:20:32[ More - 1 comment ]With exception of the power outage we had here from around 3am-5am, I have been fairly solidly working on RCM since around 2am. The only noticable changes to the current version is the 'RCM' image is now a clicky, the page validates HTML 4.01 again, and it is not autofilling your Name and URL on the Create page if you have posted before. The not so noticable change made to the current version is that when a new comic is created a comments table is created along side it kinda like I do in rantfest for user comments.

Posted on: 2006-07-19 21:14:32[ More - Add comment ]I was called off or work tonight (was supposed to be my first mandatory overtime day), so I decided to play more with RCM. I had not got around to making an RSS feed for it yet, and I decided today was the day. It is yet another little feature I can implement that won't require a lot of work/rework and that will potentially lead to something else. Much like the initial release of RCM, this is kinda ugly, but functional, and to be totally honest, it might just stay that way. I have been looking into styling my RSS feeds, but I can only really pile so many projects on myself at once. I am also kinda waiting to see if another project (next paragraph) comes to fruition.

Posted on: 2006-07-19 04:48:46[ More - 4 comments ]I have finished the toying I was doing with RCM's new look. I am still not 100% this is how it will continue looking, but anything is better than how it had looked. I had originally been designing it with a more sleek look, but then decided that a simpler, brighter look would probably fit it more. So instead of gradients and lines you get flat and rounded corners. The main goal on the redesign was shooting for a consistency of look, nothing moves or jumps, and all the controls are always in the same place. This is going to be increasingly more important as more features get added. Browser consistency is also a biggie on my list, and so far I am rendering the same across the big three in Windows. I really need a Mac around to scope it out there, and I reboot to linux to see how it looks there after this post.

Posted on: 2006-07-13 06:38:15[ More - Add comment ]I am exceptionally tired right now. I just got off of work, which is probably why. Everything was fine until around 2 am, then one of the machines on the line started acting up, and we only did around 5000 pieces after that...should have been more like 15-20,000. We also got out overtime schedule. Assuming we work every day on it (which is more and more likely the closer to the end of the year we get) that adds 21 days to my work term between now and the end of the year. That also means I only have 63 non-holiday days off before the end of the year as well. But with the number of debts and projects we have in mind, 60 hours a week is looking really good. Speaking of which, if I am ever off of work for more than a month again, please, start sending hit squads and make sure I understand that they keep coming until I get employed. I really hate myself for being off for a year and a half. I don't care that was in school for 9 months of that, I should have worked, quit for school, then worked again. Oh well, no need to beat myself up about the past. I should just use it to fuel myself to do better at my current job which should put us in a good place within the month.

Posted on: 2006-07-11 00:44:28[ More - 2 comments ]I just finished up with RCM. It does not look very pretty, but the backend is at fairly solid. I will eventually get around to making it look nice, but right now I am tired of looking at it and want to do something else. All the pics were drawn, cut, scanned, and resized by the wife. She also came up with the basic concept for a paper game using them. All I did was take most of her rules and make it into a webpage. Let me know what you think..or her..whatever.

Posted on: 2006-07-09 18:24:30[ More - 12 comments ]I had a moderately productive night last night. I got some headway into making a page out of Erin's RCM idea. If I actually work on it tonight instead of devoting all my time to SWG I should have a workable script in a couple of hours. I may later spin it in a different direction, but for now I am planning on keeping it simple.
