I had intended on distracting myself with a random ass post at some point or another, but not something like this.

Usually I watch a whole anime series before I bother with my thoughts about it. This one didn't take so long. By the first episode I came to the conclusion that it was mostly fan service with a touch of fighting. Only another anime that I watched, which had a lot of both, has ever done this. Let me give you the first episode:

It starts out with Aono Tsukuno (or Tsukune or Tsukuna, it doesn't matter really...) who fails to test into the high school his friends were going to. His dad picks up some weird dudes application and off goes Aono to some school. A bus ride through a tunnel and Aono finds himself in Halloweenland. As he walks down the gravestone littered forest to his school he gets ran over by a pinked haired girl on a bike. They have the accidental pervert touching and she goes on to explain that she is a monster, more specifically a vampire. He shrugs it off and talks to her on their way to school. Once in class, Aono's teacher explains the purpose of the school: to teach monsters how to coexist with humans. Aono starts to freak out by her next statement, "Any human that is found at this school is to be killed on sight," or something along those lines. Aono considers his choices and decides to get his ass out of there. He gets to the bus stop and finds a guy, who has been bullying him throughout Aono's time there, waiting to make Aono into a nice snack... or just kill him... Moka, the pink-haired vampire, comes running to his aid, but not until her bust and waist increase a little. After a transformation scene (in which this really does happen, along with a change of color in her eyes and hair) she kicks the orc's ass into submission. A hamster with bat wings goes on to inform the audience that the battle took x number of seconds. Aono is overjoyed at being saved. This is quickly destroyed as he finds that the bus only shows up once a month. Thus the series begins.

While I kept one of the key plot points out, this is still how the first episode's story runs... and more or less how the rest run... They introduce a new type of monster, Aono gets caught up in some fight with it, Mako transforms and kicks its ass, there is something about loneliness, and, depending on the monster or its gender, you will see them again in a later episode. So, is there anything good about this series? Kind of... I think a pros and cons list is needed for this though.

Pros, #1: the monsters. While I admit that there isn't much originality in them, it is good to see them being represented the way there are, not just some stupid bitches interpretation of them. The succubi are all about sex and enslaving the opposite gender and maybe the same gender for that matter. Witches are hated by both humans and monsters alike, but the story include the witch trails and burnings as to why the humans hate them. Orcs and lizardfolk are big, dumb, and ugly. Not much to say about them really. Of course there is the vampire. Does she hold up to the legends? Not entirely, but that will be in the cons.

#2: a nice attempt at a setting. As unlikely as it is for someone to actually go to a school that his father randomly picked up an application for... the idea of a monster school does seem to be a bit interesting.

#3: fan service? I admit that isn't a very good selling point... but then again I'm male and looking for something else to complement it on. There are about eight different types of people that don't like to watch anime girls half naked or seeing panty shots... and if you are one of those people... don't watch this?

#4: interesting characters. I'll try not to go into much detail about them, but there are some interesting characters in this anime. Fights between them and their personalities makes it one of the only reasons to really watch it. Still isn't enough for some though.

Cons #1: the female lead. Moka is a typical anime girl: cute. She, however, has brains and doesn't have E cups, but that doesn't stop her from tagging along with a guy that is pretty much stereotypical of an anime of this genre. A plus is that she doesn't always sparkle when she is out in the sun. I'll have to get a picture to show you what I mean. Things that go for her, she sucks blood, is strong, and doesn't cope with water. What gets me is the rosary that she has to wear. As far as I can tell its only purpose is to keep her from being bad ass. (technically it also decreases her bust and waist size and changes he hair and eye colors, but that is pretty much it.) It doesn't appear to alter her strength nor her appetite for blood. There is a personality change but I don't see why she can't abide by whatever it is that she thinks she needs the rosary for. It is confusing and a bit annoying...

#2: monsters and fan service. While it looks like I'm shooting down two of my pros, I'm only really shooting down one of them. The whole point of the school is to educate monsters to coexist with humans (since for some reason or another they have to.) This means that the monsters have to look like humans. One of the rules of the school is that the monsters aren't supposed to reveal their true form. This makes sense since they need to act as though they are at a human school or living with humans. The thing is... that all of the males have a thing for peeping on the females in the school... I can understand a little if they were trying to make it look like a normal school with humans... but... why are there potentially creatures that don't have any legends of romance, half-breeds, or even sex with humans drooling over humans? A male orge isn't going to look at a female human and think, "FUCK IT WITH MY DICK!," he is more inclined to think, "FOOD!," or, "ME SMASH!" Of course if he were to think, "FUCK IT WITH MY DICK!," he would end up tearing the poor woman a new hole... or in half... Another thing that bugs me is the fact that they don't really know what they are getting by entering a relationship with a monster that looks like a human. A werewolf could end up with an ooze. What then? While I am greatly over thinking this... you have to admit it is damn funny... I guess what it all really boils down to is why they HAVE to coexist with humans. Just because there are more of them... just doesn't seem like the thing monsters would do... IT DRIVES ME NUTS!!! Especially since there are monsters that pretty much live off killing humans.

#3: males vs. females. It doesn't matter the numbers or what type of monsters they are, the males always lose. Even when it is the classical vampire versus werewolf, the male only last about a minute before being completely destroyed.

#4: bad animation. There are times in which the animation is just flat out sad. It is mostly the lack of animation that causes it. At times something will be moving... and it just looks so damn bad... It is something that can't be described with words...

#5: short fights. Vampires are in a class all to themselves. Werewolves can only move faster and that is only proportional to the phases of the moon. Full moon = fastest monster out there. Which means that they only have one advantage, and it turns out to be a minor one at that... They added a running "joke" in the series. As mention before there is a hamster with bat wings that flies onto the screen and tell you how long that week's battle took. As also mentioned before it is in x seconds, and x is almost never above one hundred.

The anime had potential... but the cons detract a lot from what little it had. Even then there wasn't a whole lot that could have been done to make it any better. It is kind of sad really... I was looking forward to this anime. Who knows? I might have simply given up before it get good. That being said I have two episodes left to watch... I'll let you know if they really change much of my opinion.
