Star Trek: The Original Series - Television - 2/5
Posted on: 2007-08-09 02:26:13

I have always considered myself a Star Trek fan. Mom and I used to watch episodes of The Next Generation after school and I think some where in there we watched the then current movies as well. Since then I have watched all the series from then to current along with all the movies (DS9 being my favorite), but never got around to watching The Original Series for more than a couple of episodes.

I just finished season 2 and I have to say that I am amazed that there was ever a TNG, DS9, VoY, Enterprise, or movie. I realize that these were made in the late 60's, all but the last three episodes being over a decade older than I am, but they are just not all that good. There are a few redeeming factors, but very few. The only things that keep me watching are just to see what references others shows have to it (Mainly South Park, which has quite a few), to see the origins of the franchise, the inconsistances with the other series, and well, just to say I have actually seen them.

I guess you needed to be there.

When compared to most other programs of that time, Star Trek looked pretty good. Plots were even good for that period and staying consistant wasn't high priority for any shows either.

Especially to those of us that are either old enough to have watched the original Buck Rogers reruns as kids, Star Trek was the best sci-fi show around.

Hippies and Monsters

Every plot boiled down to fighting hippies or monsters. Recently Leonard Nimoy said in an interview that it was sad because he thought the show had much more potential than being a "creature of the week" show.

TNG and Voyager. Never really watched Deep Space 9. Enterprise was decent but they canceled too soon before they could really get the characters and plot developed well.

The original series to me is like you said, seeing the references other shows have made to it. How many "kids" our age know what Tribbles are but have never seen the actual episode? (I have, thanks Dad. hehe)
