No more new toys. - Misc - Computer - Games

So, right as I was coming off of the high of getting a new monitor, which was going to be my big purchase of the year, an opportunity for an Xbox comes my way. A friend had purchased GTA4, only to find his xbox showing the three red rings of death when he got home to play it. Being an instant gratification kinda person, he bought himself a newer, better xbox and shelfed the broken one. I told him that I would give him enough gold in World of Warcraft to buy his epic flyer if he sent the broken xbox in for repair, got it fixed, and gave it to me. The xbox was passed to my possession about 12 hours ago. Of course, I bought a game (GTA4), a remote (because I really wanted it as a media center), and because of some power cable issues a cooler unit for the xbox.

Now I also mentioned that I had new parts on the way to build a new computer. They all came in together on Thursday, and after some annoying-as-hell issues with the processor fans, it is all up and running happy. I am a little dissappointed because the guide I followed to build the machine was heavy on overclocking to make this rig really impressive, and I am failing in every aspect to overclock the machine. Ok, maybe not every aspect, I am getting about a 7% increase in clockspeed. And yes, I know clockspeed is not everything, but I was hoping to push my 1.8Ghz dual core to at least 2.2Ghz (my last processor, an Athlon 3200, ran at 2.2Ghz) and I am just below 2Ghz. Even with that failing, I am still sitting on one hell of an upgrade for me.

So yeah, I am kinda reveling in newness over here.

PS3

Regardless of which console is better or anything I would always make sure to get a GTA game for the PS. Ever since GTA3 I can't imagine playing GTA on anything other then a PS, maybe a computer.

Cool

Sounds like you got some cool new toys, awsome. Can you expand on using the x-box as a media center? that peaked my interest. Although I did just pick up a PS3 this weekend so even i there is something really cool media center wise the X-box can do it si likley not in my near future. Unless Katie dosent mind sitting on the floor of the new house for a few months. By the way you guys should come up and see the house, and hang out a bit sometime in late June or July once everyone gets over there.

Media Center.

The xbox is network capable and can connect to media shares setup on individual computers. For instance, I can add all the movies, music, and pics on my computer to the Windows Media Player library, tell WMP to share that media with a specific xbox on the network, and then the xbox can play/view them. Since the xbox is made to be viewable/readable on TVs (where as PCs look horrible on older TVs) it makes for a nice media center. Toss in a new universal remote that can control the xbox and it is even better.

I haven't messed with this yet, but I have found a few movies that won't play...which was expected. I need to do some investigating to see if I can expand the codec support on the xbox.
